Summary of what to expect below:
Gail Tverberg and Simon Michaux return to Peak Oil Chat for two complementary presentations on the physical limits now confronting the global economy and the geopolitical consequences that may follow.
Gail Tverberg: How Limits to Growth Are Playing Out Today More than 50 years after The Limits to Growth was published in 1972, Gail will examine updated data showing how closely important global trends have tracked the scenarios explored in the original work. She will discuss why the limits we are encountering may unfold differently from the conventional picture of Peak Oil, and what declining resource availability, industrial constraints, debt and economic contraction could mean for the wider economy. Gail has spent about 20 years researching the connections between energy, resource depletion, economics and complex systems through her work at OurFiniteWorld.com.
Simon Michaux: BRICS, the West and the Struggle for Commodities Simon will present new data on the growing BRICS-West geopolitical confrontation and place it in the context of physical resource limits. His presentation will examine the strategic importance of controlling commodities and the trade routes used to move them, the West's changing relationship with oil and gas, and why food and other essential resources may become increasingly important geopolitical constraints.
Together, the presentations ask a larger question: What happens to economics and geopolitics when continued material growth becomes increasingly difficult? Presentations will be followed by discussion and questions.
See you there,
